In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a race of fierce female warriors, descendents from the God of war, Ares. These strong, fearless and often ruthless women were a evocative emblem of rebellion, in a time when the patriarchal society ruled and held total influence and power. Each Amazon had to kill a man before she could marry, and depictions of notable Greek heros fighting the Amazons; being caught by surprise by their strength and ferocity; and falling in love with their wild beauty are commonplace.
