There's no doubting that Bali is pretty much heaven on earth with all that picturesque paradise and chilled vibes. But it's also a place where creativity, soul, innovation and design thrives; and Bali has steadily and unsurprisingly become something of an international design hub with a unique fashion flair of its own.
While the street uniform is laid-back bohemian chic, flowing forms with a touch of rock and roll, and a smudged smokey eye (only from all the fun you were having last night!) the fashion scene is diverse, offering everything from bold, colour-laden styles to lacey, ethereal neutrals, all injected with that tropical effortless glamorous that the Bali sartorial scene has become known for.
So in-between your lazing on the beach, soaking up the hot sun, drinking frozen Margaritas and scrunching sand in your toes...all very worthwhile pleasures! We urge you to lather on some strong sunscreen, brace the credit card and hit the pavements for some serious shopping! Here are our Seminyak style havens...
Bold patterns in eye-wateringly bright colours are what we love, and can't get enough of at Mister Zimi. Their range - simple but stylish dresses, tops, breezy flared pants and flowing skirts, are an instant summer injection for your wardrobe. Easy to wear and well-priced, we can't help but pop in and agonise over which print to go for
...all of them please.
Mister Zimi Satu, Jalan Kayu Aya No. 22, Seminyak; Open seven days, 9am-9pm.
This Bali-based label was started by fellow Brit (yay!) and has the perfect blend of badass and whimsical girlishness that we love. Lace takes centre stage but soft edges are modernised by transformative cuts, and sweet details counterbalanced by intriguing paneling and strong details.
Miss Milne, 3/ 73 Raya Seminyak. Seminyak; Open seven days, 9am-9pm.
Having stumbled upon Namu on our last trip and left with some serious booty (not just for us!...leather bracelets for everyone, ok?) this is a new but firm favourite. Apparently owner and founder Paola worked for Vivienne Westwood and Prada, hence her eye for luxey details is second to none. Gorgeous leather goods (handbag and shoe fetishists beware!) and curated fashion finds all lend to a chic, sophisticated summer collection that is stylish, bold with a discreetly utilitarian feel.
Namu, Jl. Petitenget 234x Seminyak; Open seven days, 9.30am-8pm.
Pretty much Seminyak royalty as far as labels go, Magali Pascal seems to have greatly influenced, almost defined Bali’s luxe bohemian style. Her aesthetic is the perfect balance of French style and elegance deconstructed to a looser, more casual, more effortless chic. Ultra feminine in soft tones, luxurious silks and lace, it's princess dressing for grown ups.
Magali Pascal, Jalan Raya Seminyak #65, Seminyak, Bali; Open seven days, 9am-10pm.
So you've got the floaty dresses and the boho chic...now you need that rock and roll... 'I may look serene A.F. but don't mess with me' edge. Look no further than the jewellery designs of Johnny Ramli. Edgier and heavier than the typical Bali offerings, his jewellery is handmade using trinkets, religious icons and antique coins to give each piece a unique and authentic look with a decidedly vintage and bad gal feel.
Johnny Ramli, Jl.Petitenget no.198 B, Seminyak; Open seven days, 9am-10pm
